Performance

I sit in a circle with other awkward ten year olds. I mentally prepare to annihilate them in today’s game of “Zip Zap Zop.”

But instead of initiating our typical warm up, this zany summer theatre camp director asks us all a question: What is the point of theatre?

We’re all intelligent creatures of performance. Our moms put us in this camp for a reason. We’ve got this.

…To entertain! To help people! To have fun!

He lowers his voice with a haunting glint.

The point… is to tell a story.

I graduated from Millikin University with my Acting B.F.A. in 2018. Although my calling ended up being offstage in analysis, dramaturgy, and creative direction, I am still connected to the performing artist within me.

It’s at the root of all my storytelling.
